Check out some hot spots around town
As a student at WSU, you’ll soon discover the basics--like where to get a good pizza or the best Chinese takeout. But just to get you started, here are a few popular spots on and around campus.
Ferdinand’s is our on-campus creamery and the place to go for world-famous cheese and delicious ice cream, both made with milk from our very own WSU dairy herd. Stop in for a sundae, a shake, or an espresso between classes. An obsevation room lets you watch as students, many of whom are in the Food Science and Human Nutrition program, make the cheese nearly every morning.
Fedinand's recently celebrated its 61st anniversary and is one of the most popular places in town on home game days. Remember to take some Cougar Gold cheese home to your family; they will love you for it.
The Compton Union Building is better known as "the CUB." It's the student union building and located at the heart of campus. The CUB reopened August 11, 2008 after a stunning $86 million, 2-year renovation. Almost everything inside is new, from the walls and the light fixtures to the main floor Lair Lounge (complete with 8 video game consoles). Eat lunch at the awesome food court, enjoy free movies in the state-of-the-art auditorium. Need to check your email? No problem, the CUB has all-over wireless Internet access.
You'll find offices for student organizations, multicultural student centers, and meeting rooms on the upper two floors, along with the 13,800 square-foot ballroom. The ground floor offers two banks, a postal center, the Cougar Card center, and an up-scale restaurant. Butch's Den and more student meeting rooms round out the building on the lower floor.
The Bookie sells textbooks, everyday books, and a whole lot more. You can pick up essentials like art supplies, computer software, and of course, your favorite pens, pencils, and notebooks. They also carry lots of Cougar merchandise and stuff you can use for your room. Grab some lunch or a Starbuck's espresso between classes at the Bookie Cafe.
The Bookie's formal name is the Students Book Corporation and is actually owned by the students of Washington State University. The capital stock is held in trust for the students of Washington State University; dividends are returned to the Associated Students of Washington State University (ASWSU) and the student communitiy.
The Daily Grind is a spacious café in downtown Pullman with a friendly atmosphere. Students can hook up to the wireless network, enjoy a latte or a bite to eat, and hit the books. It can also be a great place to hang out, chat, and play board games supplied by the management. Right next door is Licks Unlimited, a specialty ice cream place.
Café Moro is located half a block from the Daily Grind. It’s another good place for coffee, tea, or a snack. They’ve just expanded so you may want to grab a table and hit the books here as well. On Friday and Saturday nights, they have live music performances.
Markel Coffee House is one of the newer coffee vendors in town. Located in the CUB, Markel's offers sweet treats and brews Tully's coffee. Grab-and-go, or sit and enjoy--the choice is yours.
The Student Recreation Center is one of the largest in the country and has phenomenal workout facilities. But you can also gather here with friends to watch the big screen TV in the comfy chairs, play a game or two of pool, or join a game of sand volleyball in the SRC Backyard.
The climbing wall provides challenges to meet the needs of both beginning and experienced rock climbers.
Pullman and the surrounging area is also full of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The Outdoor Recreation Center makes it easy to join in the fun. Sign up for an eco-advenuture or rent all the gear you might need for an adventure of your own. A few of the more popular destinations include:
Chipman Trail biking/walking trail that runs between Pullman and Moscow
Boyer Park and Marina offers picnicing, swimming, and boating.
Kamiak Butte, enjoy a panoramic view of the Palouse from this unique vista.
Schwietzer Ski Resort is one of many winter sport venues within a two-hour drive of Pullman.
